Open Source Alternatives to Desktop Apps: High Quality, Free Classroom Software

Microsoft and Apple, the two companies who provide almost everyone with their computer operating system, offer included software suites. These software suites contain proprietary applications that are unique in their own right, however, they are similar in many ways. Both the Apple Mac OS and Microsoft Windows operating systems come pre-installed with software packages that include the following:

word processing application
presentation application
spreadsheet application
database application
media player and media management application

While several of these programs have their merits, there a number of free alternatives available. The differences between the paid and free programs are minor; the most troublesome (to many) being the fact that many are internet-based. So, if your internet connection is down, you can't access these programs.
